First in the Nation...again
We’ve been asked to organize a conference that will be the first in the nation and only one in Texas.
The “National Health Information Technology Summit will bring key people from the Department of Health and Human Services here to Houston. Faculty including Kim Dunn, MD, PhD and Elmer Bernstam, MD, MSE will work closely with Dean Smith to ensure the conference brings value to the school and region.
The National Health Information Network (NHIN), led by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONCHIT) seeks to “provide a secure, nationwide, interoperable health information infrastructure that will connect providers, consumers, and others involved in supporting health and healthcare. The NHIN will enable health information to follow the consumer, be available for clinical decision making, and support appropriate use of healthcare information beyond direct patient care so as to improve health.”
This vision cannot be realized without achieving a consensus among a variety of stakeholders. A consensus among the diverse stakeholders must be achieved to realize this vision in Texas and across the nation.
The goal of the summit is to bring regional healthcare stakeholders together in a consensus process that will enable input to local, state and federal government representatives, including the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (Robert Kolodner, MD). The conference will:
• Promote understanding of NHIN including Department of Health and Human Services projects and standards;
• Inform local/state institutions in Texas about the operational impact of impending health IT regulations;
• Provide an opportunity for participants to influence the Nationwide agenda;
• Stimulate new activities.
A link to the conference website and online registration will be available shortly.
